Read “Comeback Churches”

The authors conducted a survey of congregations that were once in decline but now are growing. Most of the information is basic church growth thought, not much is new concerning the declining church situation. The major ideas from the book are: change in leadership style, involvement from more members, increased prayer, develop children and youth ministries, update worship services, and become more intentional about evangelism.

So how does these ideas apply to Waynesboro? Personally, I think the leadership is doing well, there are no serious problems with the elders. We are probably not praying enough as a congregation for ourselves and the community. We are bringing on another minister to help with children and youth ministries. The ideas of updating the worship services, we could add some more life, but this book goes farther than we feel comfortable. Finally, being more intentional about evangelism, we are missing this aspect. Also, we need to do better in placing people in ministries according to their gifts.

There are three major areas of improvement for the congregation: prayer, evangelism and member involvement.
