Musings on Spiritual Matters

Years ago, if someone called me to speak, there was a instead yes, because mostly, no one ever called me to speak anyway.  Yes, maybe a summer series once and a while, but mostly it just did not happen.  There would be maybe one or two speaking opportunities.  Now it seems that these opportunities are more common.  Of course there are some issues with speaking at various events.  It was my policy to speak anywhere that wanted me.  Hey, if they want to hear me preach, I will preach or teach.  Well, I learned that there are consequences to speaking at various places.  If you speak at a certain place, another place will not have you speak.  You might be preaching the truth, but people will not think that.  You do not have your day in court to explain yourself.  So yes, it does influence your influence in the church.  So there is the issue of where to go and where not to go.

Along with the influence issue, there is how much to be gone.  I have one of the best elderships ever here at Castle Rock.  The elders see my speaking at other places as their ministry as well.  Instead of only having me do ministry locally, they see me doing national ministry as well.  So I have freedom to speak mostly as much as I like at other places.  Of course, I could abuse this, but try not to.  I know a lot of preachers have one or two weeks a year to be gone.  But I have a ton of freedom with this.  I know other speakers are gone a few times, and they could be gone a lot more, but because of the needs of local work and the family, these guys stay around a lot more.

So here is what I am wondering, what do other preachers do.  Give me some advice.
