Musings on Spiritual Matters

by Matthew Morine

Christmas Season

The eggnog comes out.  The Christmas music is playing in the background.  The tree is up with presents surrounding the base.  Family events are planned and office parties are attended.  These are some of the familiar sites of the Christmas season.  This Christmas season is especially rich for the Morine family because of the snowy weather.  A brown Christmas in Tennessee usually does not hold the same level of nostalgic feel.  The whole Christmas atmosphere is exciting.

Sometimes within the churches of Christ we have debated over the place of Christ in the Christmas Holiday.  Some reject all associations with Christmas, some celebrate Christmas as a civic holiday but without Christ, and some celebrate Christmas as a time to reflect on the birth and person of Christ.  Most people do not believe nor care that December 25th was not Jesus’ birthday.  Often people are aware of the pagan backgrounds of the date of December 25th being chosen, but mostly people do not care about the baggage of this time of the year.  There are arguments back and forth on this issue of the place of Christ in Christmas, but as for me I am thankful:

I am thankful for Christmas Eve because I love meditating on the fact that God sent his beloved Son into this world.  I am thankful for the atmosphere of rejoicing, love, and peace throughout the culture.  I am thankful for time with friends and family.  I am thankful that in America I can still say “Merry Christmas” and people think of Christ.  I am thankful for this time of year.

So pull out the eggnog, drink down some warm spice Russian tea, and exchange presents with those you love, and be thankful for the Christmas Season because it truly is a wonderful time of year.

  1. Merry Christmas Matthew! I agree with your thoughts wholeheartedly. It puzzles me that people will deny Christ in Christmas as far as the church is concerned but let the ACLU bring a lawsuit against their town for displaying a Nativity scene and these same people will be some of the first to condemn them for doing so.
