Colorado and Fly Fishing

The move to Colorado is going to happen soon. I have been giving some thought to certain hobbies while I am there. Of course I am going to be a huge hockey fan and I believe I will play in a recreational men’s hockey league. I have also been thinking about golf. I golfed a lot at Hartsville Pike and when I first arrived in Waynesboro. It has been over a year since I have picked up the clubs for a game. Golf goes to the way side when kids come into the family. The way it should be. I could not justify golfing on Saturday away from the family when I have been away from them all week. But when I go to Colorado I would a new hobby, maybe a western hobby. Golf seems too expensive and time intensive. Also, in golf you have to play every week to maintain your game. This is time I do not have. So I been thinking I will take up fly fishing. There is something about fly fishing that appeals to me. There seems to be a connection with nature, a peaceful, graceful sport. It is not a weekly activity, but something that can be done in the summer perhaps when hockey season is not taking place. The only problem is that I know nothing about fly fishing. I must find a mentor to help me with this new pursuit. If anyone has some more information on fly fishing, please direct me in the right way.

Has anyone ever done this before?

  3. Trey Morgan says:

    Matthew,

I’m a huge fly fisherman. Done it all my life. Haven’t missed a summer in the past 15. It is addicting. But you will LOVE it. Wish I could come spend a week with you. We could go fly fishing together.

  4. Matthew says:

That can happen, we can have you out to speak sometime, but part of the deal is that I must take you fly fishing.

I think you shouldn’t have to give up the things you enjoy just because you now have kids. This should be more of a reason to get out and away to do these things. I think you get back into boxing for a hobby you always enjoyed that. Why not see if there is a club in the area. Fly fishing is fun but pretty pointless like mackerel fishing but when we catch them at durbee’s parents we eat them so it is not so pointless when we catch them.

Known folks involved in bass fishing and trout fishing but never in fly fishing.

  7. Joey says:

There’s a guy down here in Alabama who runs a fly fishing place. He also preaches for a small church here in Walker County. It’s not extremely cheap to go out for a session, but if you want to get a little practice under your belt before you head out west, it might be worth checking out. It’s maybe around 2 hours from Wboro (just a guess).

I think I would hike and horse ride. Those mountains are gorgeous. Hiking is something the whole family could do. You could get into the Xtreme hiking with others in the area. I love the Rockies. Wish I lived there.

  9. Matthew says:

Thanks Joey, maybe I will try this out. Sonny, I think I will do some hiking too. I have a friend named Dale Sadler who hikes with me every year.
