Excited About Coming to Waynesboro

http://www.tennesseeland.org/images/waynesboro_tn_area.jpgCharity, the kids, and I are making a trip back to Tennessee on Thursday.  The family is going to see some friends and family members and I am going to see the classroom at Harding Graduate School.  But over the weekend, Charity and I are going to Waynesboro to see everyone.  On Sunday, I will be preaching for the congregation.  It seems odd, but it seems like it has been forever since we have seen everyone.  The time frame has only been four months, but it seems like years since we have been there.  I am looking forward to some of the memories coming back to me and seeing some old friends.  I love going to Nova Scotia and preaching because of the spiritual vibe that I receive from standing in the church building and delivering the message because it was the first place where I ever preached.  Also, it is my hope someday to go back to Camp Wood, Texas to preach there as well because I did a summer internship there which I enjoyed a lot.  I believe it will be exciting and pleasurable to preach in Waynesboro for the Sunday again.  I have so many happy and enjoyable memorizes from that town and congregation.  It will be a great blessing to be in Waynesboro again.

  1. Matthew says:

Do you have places from the past that you love preaching for?

Coming up soon I will be preaching for the Mt Zion congregation. it will be their friends and family day, plus they have finished a building project of classrooms and other rooms as well. This was my first preaching job. I worked with a congregation (Petersville) for 11 1/2 years as associate and youth. I am excited because I have been gone from there since 01. The preacher before me has never gone back and I really didn’t think they would ever ask me. Not because there was or is problems but it seems to be the way they do things. I am still close to many at the congregation. I am excited and honored to be asked. Glad that you are going back to W’boro.

Everyone is excited that you will be here Sunday! I just wish I was going to be there, however we will be at CYC. I know you will be a blessing to the congregation and by the way, I’ll be leaving my digital recorder on the podium so you can record the sermon for my podcast. Don’t forget!

The first congregation I preached at was Wayne Furnace for a youth event. I think I was about 12 years old. I remember I had to stand on one of those old wooden Coca-Cola cases so people could see me from behind the pulpit! Sadly, I haven’t preached at Wayne Furnace since that one time some 27 years ago. I must have made some impression!

And I still have to stand on a Coca-Cola case.

It is indeed a joy to return to places where you have preached. I have been privileged to do so at most of the places where I have done regular work. Though I grew up in the Waynesboro congregation (I go all the way back to when they met in what had once been a little frame dwelling house) I think I have been back only one time for a gospel meeting but it was an enjoyable experience. I have been privileged to return to every one of the congregations in the county that provided me with opportunities to speak as a kid preacher, for several gospel meetings.

  6. Matthew says:

These times always give me warm feelings too. They are reminders of where we started and been.
