If My Elders Were a Hockey Line
Probably this line of thinking has never happened in the churches of Christ. This mindset can only come for a Canadian minister in the South. I have been giving some thought to this which means that I must have too much time on my hands, but I want to give the run down of the elders as a hockey line. First of all, there is Mike the money goalie. Mike is the most calm, cool, an composed elder. I have always said about Mike that if I was commanded to take a fort in a battle, there is no one on earth that I would rather have beside me than him. In any difficult situation, he is always Money. We have the veteran defensemen Vernon. Vernon has been an elder the longest of the present elders. Vernon is the man you want on the ice when the game is on the line. He has been in pressure situations before and he always knows to make the right lead pass out of the zone. Terry is the perfect stay-at-home defense. He is good at everything he does. He always makes the right choice and he is always counted on in big matters. Bob is the sniper of the group. He is creative in scoring for the big win. He is magic on ice. Alan is the ultimate two-way forward. He is the worker of the line as he is willing to play defense or offense. He does the little things like work hard in the corners for the team to win. Jerry is the balanced center who has multiple talents on the ice. When he plays he makes everyone better around him. He is the play maker of the group. We have a great group of elders that compliment one another perfectly. We have so much talent in the elders that we are tremendously blessed.

Well, since you have listed no goons or enforcers, I hope that they are all collectively looking out for your blindside…
Grew up in Rochester, NY (Amerks fan) and have a nephew playing at a very high youth level. He is a goalie and as a ninth grader made the varsity squad of one of the best hockey schools in the northeast, Aquinas HS.
Even though I went to Oklahoma Christian in the mid 70′s, I managed to have great friends from the Vancouver, BC area… in fact my room mate from Tulsa married a girl from Victoria Island and they now live there.
So… I am guessing that you miss Hockey Night In Canada, eh? I actually got to meet Don Cherry while he was coaching in Rochester (yeah, I’m that old).
Seems to me there is some controversy about the latest scoring machine in juniors (broke Gretzky’s records all along the way) because his birthday is just beyond the cutoff to be draftable this year. I forget his name, but he plays in the Ontario Major Juniors… I think.
I am enjoying your blog. It is very possible that I will get to attend some of the mid-week sessions of the F-H lectureships this coming February. Would love to get to meet you and talk about what a great foundation for our ministry coming out of the Northeast is… we come pretty much unattached and unencumbered by a lot of the baggage that goes along with coming out of this area seems to have for so many people.
I have no idea when I will be at the lectureships at this point, but if you are planning to be there, contact me via my attached email. I’d appreciate meeting and visiting with you.

His name is John Tavares, and it is my biggest dream for the Nashville Predators to get to draft him next year. Also, I will be at the FHU lectureship on Tuesday for sure. We will meet up. And I think you are right about the lack of baggage that people from this area have for minitry.
