Musings on Spiritual Matters

Leadership Survey

In line with the book I just read, I am putting some of it into practice.  Here is the survey I did for the congregation to help me lead better.  It would be good for preachers to use this to understand their talents better.  Sometimes surveys are not good because people just really take the time to hurt you, but this one is safe and will be helpful.  I share it to help other preachers grow and develop.  Here it is:

Leadership Attributes Survey

I just finished this wonderful book about “Why Are We Bad at Picking Good Leaders” and I wanted to do some self-assessment.  The authors of the book identify seven major qualities of a good leader.  So I am asking for the people in the congregation to rank these qualities in order that you see them demonstrated in me.  Of course, some of these will not be that strong, and maybe you might think some are non-existent.  Though, I am looking for some feedback to understand the areas that I am stronger and the areas that I am weaker, in order to spend time in prayer and training to develop these gifts.  Please just list these qualities in order, from the strongest area to the weakest area.

Integrity: honesty, consistency, and solid ethics.  A leader follows up on promises.  Words match deeds.  Do not jeopardize others in order to advance their own agendas.

Empathy: involves a fundamental ability to tune into other, by appreciating subtleties in facial expression, tone of voice, demeanor, and body language.  It involves listening and taking other people’s perspectives, can tune in to emotional channels between people. Social savvy.

Emotional Intelligence: self-mastery skills, the ability to perceive, control and improve the connection between what we feel and the way we act.  How well someone is attuned to himself or herself.

Vision: The ability to create a compelling vision, one that takes people to a new place, and has the ability to communicate the future image.

Judgment: enables a leader to steer the group from point A to point B.  Good decision making, can zero in on what is important, can see the big picture, and can take decisive action.

Courage: Not faint of heart.  Do not shun conflict, facing it, mediating, and shaping it, even at a great personal cost.  Can act in the face of fear.

Passion: This is not charisma, but is the person’s drive to accomplish a goal.  It is inner engine to achieve.

Please list these in order from the strongest to the weakest:
