Musings on Spiritual Matters

Leave the Church Better Off

As I am processing the fact that I am moving away from Waynesboro, I have been reflecting on the ministry here. I have seen preachers go to a church divide it, kill it, and destroy the body of Christ. It has always been my intention to leave everything congregation that I have worked with better after when I left. I find it odd that a minister would want to get up and hurt a church before he leaves. Or even if the church has mistreated him, why would a man try to get revenge. If he was mistreated, allow the Lord to work His vengeance. I believe the Lord has the ability to deal with ungodly congregations and leadership. Churches do not prosper with unbiblical dynamics. Fortunately, at Waynesboro my family and I have been treated like kings and queens in the congregation. Never has the eldership mistreated us, hurt us, or did not do what was best for us. The congregation is loving, kind, and warm. The minister before me told me before I came that the church would love my family. It has. My kids are treated like their kids at Christmas, and for their birthdays. I guess one can say that the people who really made us leaving with the church better off is the church itself. We came here with an average of 163 on Sunday morning and last few weeks we have had 199 and 195. The church is really growing. Some of my friends have asked, why go? We are going because in Colorado there are few preachers, few congregations, and few churches. In Canada, I watched a show about a dog that traveled around to various towns to help the people. I feel like the work in Waynesboro is healthy, the congregation has come from a declining church to a growing church, but it is time to move on and help another congregation grow and be healthy. I feel like the dog in life.

Semi-related opinionated thoughts: Leave on a high note; try to walk the fine line between nurturing relationships with the congregation you’re leaving BUT give the new guy room to do his own thing without your shadow. Always had my final sermon be THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT with the preface: After listening to me preach for the past several years, you’re entitled to hear one good sermon before I leave!
