Pedigree and Mutts
I have always been a mutt in the churches of Christ. If you travel any distance in the church circle you will discover that you always know someone mutually. The family circle is interconnected in numerous ways. This would seem normal since church members normally marry other church members. And why not. It has always interested me that there is a pedigree system in the church. Maybe I am wrong, there is none, and I just see one, but it seems that hires have happened because of family background. And really you cannot blame the leaders for this. Who would not want someone that has had experience in churches, have had a mentor that was a famous preacher, and someone that understands the fellowship well. Hey, if I was a leader, I would hire the son of the prophet too. It definitely seems safer. So this is not a post about family favoritism, or people who have been blessed by family, for I hope someday my son will be a preacher and be hired because he is my son. I want the family name of Morine to be respected and loved in the church. So do not take me wrong, there is no bitterness for some of the best pedigree preachers are some of the best to me as well. But back to me and my mutt status. As a preacher, maybe you can become upset about this dynamic, but really why. We all have the same Father. We all serve the same Lord. Maybe your place in the church is not a paved path to the biggest church in the brotherhood, but trust me, you can reach people that those with pedigree cannot. You have a voice that is special and needed. You do not speak church well, but you can speak to the hearts of those outside of the church culture. In the church, we all have a place in the kingdom. And let’s face it, who does not like the mutt story of growing up and making something of himself. I know God does.

Matthew: you are always “Best in Show” in my book! It is not who you know or who you marry— it is all about your heart and how it belongs to God. You, my brother, are not a “mutt” in any shape, form or fashion.
