Preacher Training Camps
I was added to the Bear Valley Preacher’s Camp group on Facebook. This got me thinking about this ministry in the church. I believe this camps have been around from sometime. But it seems that these camps are gaining some popularity. There was one congregation in the Nashville area that hosted a camp, in which my friend Dale Sadler went to numerous years and considered it to be a formative experience. At the camp, he was able to meet some preachers that would ultimately become mentors to him. As well as providing inspiration, it was an networking time. I know that Heritage Christian provides a preacher’s camp, and Bear Valley does, and I believe that Graymere church of Christ has one too. There are a few of these camps taking place in the brotherhood. These camps are highly helpful for preaching development. Young men that are thinking about going into ministry should be encouraged to attend. The book of Proverbs notes that in training young people it is wise to expose them to certain realities. Of course the author notes exposure to sinful realities, but also this principle applies to positive realities. It is hard for a young man to know if preaching is a good direction for him in life. These camps allow the young man to see what preaching is somewhat like. It is not a full blown exposure to the emotional part of the ministry, but is a good picture of preachers and what it is like to be one in the church. Also, the camps provide a head start for young men. The men are given certain skills in developing a lesson. It is basic teachings on preaching, that with time will be developed into more of an art and skill. I am glad there organizations and churches are doing these camps as this is helping with the shortage of preachers in the church.
