Review of 4/44/14
This book is about one young man’s journey in climbing all of the 14ers in Colorado. It is really just part one of the journey, and at this point I am not sure if part two has been published yet. The book is about the adventure of David. He is a single guy, and lives in Colorado Springs. He has an interesting life in which he has the freedom to travel and explore the world. His heart is given to new experiences, and it seems that if he was ever held down he would be miserable. Fortunately, he has the time to explores various places, and the book was good because we share the same passion for climbing mountains. The deals a lot with the history of each 14er, as well as his thoughts on the wild places of America. He really has a love for the wilderness, and especially places in which man is not allowed to overtake for profit. He goes into some of the political debates surrounding the protected areas. This was interesting as you learn about how areas of America got reserved for all of humanity to enjoy. He also talks a lot about his views on life. One of the missing elements of the book was more stories on being on 14ers. Up in the mountains, funny stuff always happens. Maybe it is because you have a lot less air up there, so normal stuff seems funny, but really I wished he told some more stories. He hiked mostly by himself on these trips, but you always meet people, so some more accounts of this would have been nice. Also, it was great reading the book because I have been up almost all of the early peaks as well. This is for those who love hiking and adventure. Definite a enjoyable read for those who love 14eers.
