Review of “How the Mighty Fall”

How The Mighty Fall: And Why Some Companies Never Give InCollins is one of the best business writers in the nation.  Often business material does not have direct overlay with church organization, but with Collins there seems to be principles that apply to church culture.  His previous book, “Good to Great” was excellent and applied to church life as well.  This book deals with the sad reality of companies going broke.  This was a study of some of the best companies in the world that met with a downfall.  This book highlights some of the various stages of a decline.  The sad conclusion is that the church in some places are following the path of these one great companies.  The five stages are “hubris born of success, undisciplined pursuit of more, denial of risk and peril, and grasping for salvation, and capitulation to irrelevance or death.  One can see various stages and congregations in these stages.  This book should be read so that leaders can pinpoint the problems in a congregation and work on solving them.  The book is relatively short and a worthy read.
