Review of “In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts”
This is a fascinating book. It is written by a guy who works in Canada, in one of the most drug infested areas in Vancouver. He sees people who are highly addicted to the strongest forms of drugs. And he is an expert in the field of addiction. This book is a story about the effects of drug use, as well as a analysis of drug users. This book dives deep into the war on drugs, he provides his thoughts on what to do in this situation. He is provocative as he suggests that maybe instead of fighting against drug use in these extreme cases, one should just manage the use. He goes through the nature of an addictive personality, as well as talks about how people develop addictions, from buying C.D.s to taking cocaine. He notes that most people have some form of addiction, it is just a chosen pacifier. It might not have the consequences of some other addictions, but the process is the same. He also talks about how to overcome addiction, which is interesting because he points to the need to be spiritually connected. He mentions that only the spiritual can fill the hole that addiction seeks to fill but never accomplishes the task. This is one of the most interesting and thought provoking read ever. It also helped me deal with addiction in others, as well as addictive tendencies in myself. It is a long read, but you will walk away from the book with a huge understanding of addiction in life. Great book.
