The author Ed Viesturs is a mountaineering legend. This is the only America to summit all of the 26,000ft mountains in the world. What makes this man even more special is that he did it without bottled oxygen. He is a beast. In his second book, K2 he explores the great history of this dangerous mountain. On this mountain, Viesturs learned valuable lessons. He pushed himself beyond his limits and almost never returned. He has a motto of “The summit is optional, but getting home is not.” In these pages you learn of a man who loves mountains, but really he is more than that. He is a compassionate and good human-being. He has ethics. He has concern for others. In a sport of ego’s, he has put others ahead of himself. The book will hold your attention, it will make you feel like you are hanging on the side of the mountain with the “great motivator” overlooking you. Viesturs is one of the few people I really want to meet in life. He is the man!

I almost got to meet him. He was in Aspen for a weekend, but I just returned from a trip to two fourteeners, and did not have the time to go up to see him. Hopefully, he will be back in Colorado soon.
His motto is why he is still alive. Too many hikers keep going even though all factors are against them and they die because of it.
