Review of “What Pastor’s Wish Church Members Knew”

What Pastors Wish Church Members Knew: Helping People Understand and Appreciate Their LeadersThis was a quick read.  I was interested in knowing what do preachers want church members to know.  This might seem odd since I am a minister, but I was curious.  The book is mostly a compilation of various quotes from ministers in America.  The author performed a huge survey of ministers in various denominations.  The book does picture a true outlook of some of the concerns of preachers in churches, though the book does picture the average preacher as a bit whinny.  The book makes some afford to avoid this image, but nevertheless it is present.  This is because often the minister is not allowed to complain.  It is usually interpreted as a sign of weakness.  The book touches on family life, money issues, anxiety, difficult members, and the fear of being fired.  The book would be eye opening to members in a congregation, but mostly the book could be read or summarized for the majority of people in a few pages.  You do not have to read every quote to get the point.  Personally, in my ministry, I have stopped trying to explain to members some of the issues that I face.  There is usually little understanding of the issues.  This is why a strong preacher friend network is important.  I do not understand what a accountant does, so why would he understand what I do.

I suspect that you are right that there is very little understanding of the issues. One thing that might help a congregation member in any congregation is a nice little book called “What is a Healthy Church Member?”. Here’s the amazon link:
