That, The, Our, and My Preacher–Part 1
By the title, it would seem that there is a struggle with pronouns relating to the preacher. People use these various terms to describe the minister. Most preachers have been called by all of these designations. But these qualifications before the term preacher are meaningful to the local congregation. These terms connote the amount of respect and truth by those who use these terms. The terms are on a continuum of truth. “That” represents the lowest level of truth while “My” represents the highest level of trust. A minister will hear these terms in men’s business meetings, in being introduced to friends in the community, and in overhearing conversations between members of the congregation. These terms shine a bright light on the preacher’s love in the church. Often as a minister will work and live among the congregation the word before preacher will change. As trust increases, the terms change.

I have been called all of these as some time, you never want to be “that” preacher. It’s never a good thing!
