The Choker List

This past week was a time for chokers.  In this post, I wanted to highlight some of the major downfalls of the sporting world.  The first on the choker list is the Alabama Crimson Tide.  Rarely do I ever desire to see the Tide win, but for the bowl game I wanted to see the SEC reign.  Utah was undefeated, and it would be nice for the SEC to show domination on the national stage.  BUT Alabama choked.  In the first quarter, the Tide were rolled over 21-0.  The second choker was the Denver Broncos.  Moving to Denver made me want to pull for the team, but in the game that was a must win, the team fell flat.   The head coach was even fired, which was big news in the area.  The team started well for the season, but choked.  The third chokers were the USA Junior hockey team.  Most Americans are not aware of the World Junior Championship in hockey that happens every holiday season.  But this is a huge tournament in hockey in Canada.  During a Canada-USA game, the Americans were up 3-0 in the first period, but because of John Travares the team score a quick three games and pulled back into the game.  The Canadians ended up winning 7-5.  One final side choker were the Colts who were hot going into the playoffs but choked against the Chargers.  On a positive “heart” note, Canada in the World Jrs were playing the Russians in a playoff game.  The Canadians were down a goal with two minutes to go.  But in the last 5 seconds in the game, the Canadians scored the game tying goal.  Clutch!  The game went into overtime with no goal scored, but in the shootout the Canadians scored two straight goals and blanked the Russians.  Clutch again!  A lot of the sporting world was choking but Canada was winning.

The most entertaining game I have watched in a long time. I was jumping up down so much the cat was scared into the other room. I couldn’t believe that with 5 seconds to go they tied the game. It was very exciting to watch. Then the two shoot out goals were the icing on the cake. I don’t even think the Canadian team has even played their best game yet. I hope they are saving it for the gold medal game. The US team had a good team but it just took one bad game and they don’t even get a medal. The game is the talk of the town up here right now everyone is extremely excited about the game tomorrow night.

I’m not sure that Alabama choked. It looked to me like Utah was simply the better team. In fact, although I would like to see Oklahoma win the championship, if I were voting in the AP Poll, I would have to vote for Utah as the #1 team in the nation. They proved themselves as the only undefeated team in the country…and as a team that could handle the “big name” universities.

Another great victory for Canada. If there is one thing Canada is great at it is hockey. Five Years in a row and we are still #1 on the ice.
