Musings on Spiritual Matters

The Problem with Preachers

thoughtful.jpgYou preachers out there might have this problem. I certainly do. You are so busy doing the work of the ministry, you are visiting people, dealing with people, planning and preparing sermons, working in the community, writing books, articles, bulletin articles, paper articles, hosting radio shows, T.V. shows, and dealing with congregational problems that you have no time for this. You need to make time, and I am talking to myself first. I get so busy doing the work, I do not take time to reflect on the work. We sometimes do not think about what is working, the direction the congregation is going in, the plans and effectiveness of the church, we just get out there doing the work. Every week, all of us need to budget time into our weeks to think about what is going on. We need to do this as well as elders. Let us never get so busy doing the work that we do not have time to reflect and pray about the work.

Matthew … you always have a way of challenging me. Thanks for the reminder.

So very true. I have spent 8 days with one guy. He has a one bedroom apt. We are about half through getting his stuff out in 8 days. He has some mental problems. He has boxes ,clothes, paper, trash stacked to the ceiling in every room. I have never seen anything like it. It has killed my study time. I went to the hospital one time. Have not visited anyone in this eight days. Neglected my wife and everyone else. The sad part is this guy has no one. I allowed this to hamper my prayer life too. It has physically and mentally drained me.

We must find the time for self devotion. Thanks Matt for a good reminder.

  3. Matthew says:

You two are some of the best people, you both have huge hearts for people. This is why we do what we do, we just have to remember that Jesus got away from prayer. It is not being selfish to focus on self and ministry at times.

  4. Great advice! Well said. Reflection on ourselves and the work and the church is certainly a must for all ministers and church leaders. God bless you Matthew!

  5. Matt Vaughan says:

    Timely. Good advice.
