Triangulation in Preaching

http://randt.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/hostile-takeover-5.jpgThroughout life people seek to triangulate those around them.  This is the art of positioning a relationship where two are against one.  You have two friends against one friend, you have two family members against one family member, you have two church members against one church member.  You understand the point.  A preacher must be careful about not triangulating a congregation.  This is done when the preacher uses the Word of God against the congregation.  A preacher that always seems to be in line with the word of God and is against the congregation that is disobedient to the word, will soon find the congregation ready for the preacher to leave.  The congregation will not use the idea of “that preacher is always triangulating us with the word of God, but will state ideas of “he is negative, he is unloving, he is always bashing us with the Bible.”  No one likes to be in a triangulated relationship, especially the person that is the alone one.

Instead of coming at the congregation with the word of God, the preacher should come from the congregation to the word of God.    The preacher triangulates with the congregation as they both look at the word of God together.  The Bible does not mind standing on its own.

If you go with this approach, the congregation will feel more loved.  The congregation will grow because the preacher comes to the text on their behalf.
